GC900 continues legacy of original Viewty, popular with 7 million shutterbugs
LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today officially launched its new Viewty Smart (LG-GC900) camera phone with a first-in-its-class Intelligent Shot Mode that makes it easier to take great photos by automatically analyzing scenes and adjusting camera settings accordingly.
This announcement comes just as LG has reached a major milestone with another camera phone: the original Viewty, launched in November of 2007, has now sold 7 million units. Designed to look like a compact digital camera, Viewty was the world's first full touchscreen 5 megapixel camera phone. It was immensely popular from the start, selling 310,000 units in just the first five weeks of its release in Europe.
"Viewty's popularity has been due to its combination of advanced technology and innovative design," said Mr. H. S. Paik, President LG Electronics Gulf FZE. "We're looking to continue the leadership we established with new phones that offer game-changing features just like the original."
The new Viewty Smart builds on the heritage of its predecessor but with significantly upgraded features and a focus on making photography easier and more enjoyable. The smart in this new phone's name refers to its camera technology, specifically its Intelligent Shot Mode. In this mode, Viewty Smart automatically analyzes the subject, background and lighting conditions and adjusts camera settings accordingly to ensure hassle-free, picture perfect results every time. This feature is a first for a camera phone and is still rare even on standalone digicams.
"In the past, camera phones have been all about the specs and the megapixels, not about the pleasure of taking pictures," Mr. H. S. Paik said. "Viewty Smart changes everything, giving you pictures that look exactly like what you see. It is the most advanced 8 megapixel camera phone on the market not only because of its specs, but because of the unparalleled user experience it delivers."
Viewty Smart boasts improvements to both its software as well as its hardware. The new phone incorporates LG's new 3D S-Class User Interface, with a few extra features such as an onscreen selector dial that makes switching to camera mode faster and easier. An 8 megapixel camera gives 60 percent higher resolution than the 5 megapixel Viewty, better for large prints as well as sharing online. Light sensitivity up to ISO 1600 and LED flash keep details crisp and clear, even in dim lighting. And its razor-sharp WVGA touchscreen is a perfect match for Viewty Smart's high-quality images and is ideal for watching DivX or Xvid movies on-the-go. LG has even improved the phone's ability to capture video, adding DVD-quality recording. Even with all these digital camera features, Viewty Smart is just 12.4 mm thick and weighs a mere 102g. This makes Viewty Smart the slimmest and most portable 8 megapixel phone to date.
The Viewty Smart retails at AED 1,999 and can be purchased from July 30th. LG has also announced plans for a 12 megapixel camera phone with even more smart features, slated for launch later this year.
