LG crowns Dubai brothers as winners in first Windows Gaming Championship
March, 2005
The first-ever LG Windows Gaming Championship (WGC) received an overwhelming response from the UAE’s gaming community with over 350
enthusiasts participating for the top honours. |

Open to both serious as well as casual gamers, the two-day PC gaming tournament, held at Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates from June 22-23,
was presented by global and regional digital leader LG Electronics and the region’s well-known computing magazine, Windows Middle East.
After 15 qualifying rounds, each of 20-minute duration, Dubai-based brothers Rashed ("Caster Human") and Shahed Ahmed ("Bombern00b") emerged as
winners of the team event category, beating all competition in the Warcraft III: Frozen Throne tournament. The duo managed an outstanding score and beat
runners-up Mohammed Owais Farooq and Carlson Nazareth D’Souza. The brothers took home US$2000 each in cash, while the runners-up received US$1000.
Describing their victory as an achievement that would firmly enhance their reputation in the region's gaming community, Rashed Ahmed said:
"The thrill of beating other veteran gamers is an amazing experience. We knew what we were up against and had to ensure we can overcome the
established competition. Our win firmly shows who the boss in this genre is."
In the individual category, contestants vied with each other to demonstrate their skills in the Quake 4 game. As the audience watched in eager
anticipation, Anas Ilyas overcame the tough fight put up by Sheldon Rodrigues to take the top prize of US$ 2000.
"It was difficult to beat the 128 players who were all determined as I was and it required all of my effort to clinch a victory,"
explained Ilyas.
"As I reached the qualifying stages, I became more and more convinced that I would get the first position. I am now keenly waiting
to participate in the next championship where I can consolidate my reputation as the No. 1 gamer in this region."
Pointing out that the event's success would pave the way for similar tournaments in the coming months, C. H Lee, President,
LG Electronics Gulf FZE, said: “We are pleased that everyone had as much fun as we did during the two days. The first WGC has
captured the imagination of the region’s gaming community and we are confident that in the next events, we will see an even bigger turnout."
As headline sponsors of this event, LG provided twelve 19-inch LX 70 series monitors that were completely networked to computers and gaming equipment.
LG also erected five 42-inch plasma screens for weekend shoppers to enjoy the action, and to also display the latest P1 notebook PC's,
equipped with Intel's Dual Core processor.
"WGC has proved a serious smash with gamers here. It attracted a massive 240 participants over the course of the two days, making it what we believe
was the largest UAE PC event of its kind to date," said Matt Wade, editor of Windows Middle East English.
"This bodes very well for the future WGC contests we have in the pipeline. Interested gamers can get advance details of these by signing
up for our e-Windows newsletter over at itp.com."
The WGC was an official event of the Dubai Summer Surprises. The championship was co-sponsored by nVIDIA and AMD.
